The Origin of Fox Society

The Fable & Yale President’s Speech

Yale University President Peter Salovey encouraged students to emulate the fox in his 2017 freshman address.

The “Fox and Hedgehog” story originated from ancient Greek poets:

  • Hedgehog sticks to one universal principle
  • Fox finds connections between seemingly unrelated things

President Salovey said:

“At university, I want to encourage you to be more like foxes, to learn different ideas and consider different perspectives. Try everything, then decide what suits you best.”
